» A Passionate Rant About Social Media

Mike Arauz has an interesting take on how social media (as a term) is being over-used & misused.

The very first assignment of blame goes to “everyone who claims to be a social media expert” because how can we call ourselves experts on something that is ever-evolving?

I’m 22 years old, so I think the only thing I’m really an expert on is having fun as a 20-something in NYC. But- I work in social media. And I love social media. And I totally see where he’s coming from. In my Twitter bio, I say I am a student of social media. I chose “student” because I’m still learning. I think I’ll always still be learning, and I hope I’m always a student.

‘Social Media’ has become a buzzword that people use just like all the other marketing speak. Sometimes it’s laughable. But sometimes it’s real. Sometimes it does go beyond facebook. Sometimes it isn’t just another PR broadcast channel for artists. Sometimes it’s used to create meaningful (dare i say lasting?) connections that are relevant.

Mike ends his post saying “Social media is not a bumper sticker slogan; it’s the future of mankind.” How appropriate. :)
